Rainbow paper

Aim: To separate colours by using the process of chromatography                                                      Definition: Chromatography is a method of separating out materials from a mixture using a liquid.

Materials:

1 boiling tube

2 Pen marker

3 water

4 filter paper

5 scissors

6 test tube stand

7 ruler

8 pencil

Steps:

1. Cut up the filter paper into strips ready to write on with felt pens.

2. Rule a line 1cm from the bottom of the paper.

3. put 8ml of water into the bottom of the boiling tube

4. draw two coloured pen dots on the pencil line

5. drop the paper strip into the boiling tube and once it is touching the water at the bottom you can crease the top of the paper over.

6.  watch, take 2 photos and observe the chromatography

Conclusion:

What colours changed the most: green

How many new colours did i see? none

Wich colour travelled further est green

Chromatography

Chromatography is a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.

Aim: To separate the colours from the skittles by using chromatography.

Materials:

1. 6 skittles

2. water

3. petri dish

4. beaker

Process:

Step 1: Get your equipment set up ready to pour 50mls of water into the petri dish with skittles

Step 2: Place the skittles into the petri dish around the edges

Step 3: Pour 50mls water gently into the middle of the petri dish

step 4: Watch as the water removes the dye from the skittles. See which colour reaches the middle fastes

Osmosis - gummy bears

Osmosis: The movement if solvent through the wall of a solid.

I want to find out what happens to gummy bears when we put them into different liquids.

I am predicting that the gummy bears will grow in the liquids

Equipment:

three solutions - water, sugar and salt

four gummy bears of the same colour

two dishes

marker pen

Electronic balance

measuring cylinder

beaker

Solvent

dry

wet

Water

Red 2.46

5.94

Salt water

Clear 2.48

3.90

Sugar water

Yellow 2.45nu

6.01

 Findings:
The water that was included in the first gummy bear dish made the gummy bear change from a dry weight of 2.46 to a wet weight of 5.94. The difference between the two weights was 3.48. This means that the gummy bear absorbed 3.48 grams of water though the process of osmosis. Te salt water gummy bear dish has a change from a dry weight of 2.48 and a wet weight of 3.90 that mean the different's was 1.92 grams. Lastly we did one last one with sugar water. When the bear was dry it was 2.45 gram and when it was wet it was 6.01 the difference was 3.56.
